SOPHIE CARTER

'I work intuitively. When I paint there is no complete plan, I’m compelled to throw paint down, layer upon layer. The painting builds it’s essence in these layers and I watch for the moment it starts to reveal itself. This is the point when I begin to make conscious decisions that lead to the final painting. It’s this unpredictability and freedom that drives me as an artist.

The main part of my practice is about how paint behaves. There’s a certain amount of play and experimentation in all my work. Many of the techniques I use I’ve learnt to manipulate to get the results I want, others are uncontrollable and I work with the outcome. I build layers of paint, rubbing back, washing off, letting each decision I make lead to the next.

I love the freedom of painting this way, the spontaneity. Ultimately, I allow the initial layers of paint to guide me to the final outcome of the painting.'

Sophie Carter was born in 1972 and was lucky enough to grow up in Cornwall. She is strongly affected by the coastal light and space as well as the vast skies above the sea.  After a career in horticulture, Sophie has fulfilled her childhood dreams of becoming an artist and now paints full-time with tremendous success.​  Her paintings offer an escape, a sense of beauty in the natural world around us.

Sophie uses mixed media to create her paintings; oil acrylic, ink and even crayon - whatever it takes to achieve the consistency and vibrancy she is searching for to complete each beautiful painting.
